The Graham & Co, Phoenicia, Catskills, United States
– read the full review on the The Telegraph.
Flee the city, breathe in the fresh Catskill Mountain air and get back to basics at this no-frills conversion of a trad 1940s motel which transplants a rugged Brooklyn aesthetic to humble Upstate town, Phoenicia.
A swerve from Main Street in Phoenicia – which at first glance is an underwhelming stretch of clapboard establishments – you soon realise the charm of these parts is the lack of fuss and twee. Here at the foot of Hunter Mountain, the largest of the conifer- and pine-covered peaks, the main stretch of low-rise houses includes a few quirky independent shops and decent eateries. Thirty seconds from Highway 28, only a 25-minute drive from arts-filled Woodstock, it’s a great base for hikes along rivers and up to impressive waterfalls. Trailways Buses run from NYC’s Port Authority to Phoenicia daily; $66.50 (£50) return.
